Lawn Care for the Cheap and Lazy

Share

Keeping your lawn looking beautiful can take a lot of time and work.  When you’re out there sweating in the heat of summer, do you ever wonder if there isn’t some way to have a great looking lawn without so much time and effort?

You could hire a lawn service, but you’ll quickly find out how very expensive that can be. And most of us like working in the yard, we just want it to be a little easier. So here are a few simple lawn care tips  that will save you time, effort and money.

Lawn care for the cheap and lazy begins with the adjustment of your lawn mower blades. Keep your blades sharpened for better cutting. Raise them to the highest level on your mower. Cutting your grass a little longer protects the root system of your lawn and allows it to grow stronger. The grass will become thicker and it will be much harder for weeds to take hold. Having a thicker and longer lawn will actually require less water because the ground and roots will hold the water it does receive and it will not evaporate as fast.

Your grass will be a little longer between each mowing, but it will have a natural and well kept look. If having your grass longer is something you just can’t live with, you may have to mow a little more often. But your grass will be healthier and look green and lush.

You don’t have to water your grass every day and when you do water it you don’t have to let the sprinkler run for hours on end. Actually, you can over water your lawn. When the soil absorbs too much water, the oxygen is removed. The roots of your grass need oxygen to stay strong and healthy. Nutrients your grass needs can be washed away by too much watering.

Edging your lawn gives it that perfectly trimmed look that we have come to know and love. But it’s one of those things in the too much work category. So when you edge your lawn,  angle the trimmer towards the grass. The edging will last longer and you will be able to skip edging more often. Same great look, much less work.

With just these simple tips, you should be able to save some time and money on your real pretty lawn.

Easy Perennials For Your Garden

Share

If you love flowers the way I do, there is no such thing as too many. I just love the look of a well manicured garden with bright beautiful flowers.  There is a small conflict of interest here for me though.

While I want my garden to look lovely and cared for, I am just not the type to spend hours digging in the dirt, planting, weeding, feeding, watering…good grief! I’ve become exhausted just thinking about it.

I really want my flowers to just appear every spring and look beautiful and perfect through the fall. Is that too much to ask? Actually, no it isn’t! As it turns out there are flowers that are perennials. In other words, they come back year after year. You plant them once, and just enjoy.

Ok, maybe it’s just a little more complicated than that. You still need a prepared flower bed, and there will likely be some weeding involved. But the flowers will come back over and over again.  In fact, they multiply and you will have enough to divide and plant elsewhere or share with friends.

Just to show you a small sampling of what’s available, and to make it really easy if you see something you must have, I’ve arranged a little window shopping for your pleasure. Enjoy!

Landscaping Rocks

Share

The strategic placement of landscaping rocks can completely change the look of your yard or garden. Smaller ones can be used to form a border around trees or flower beds. Larger ones can be installed in a part of your yard that has a significant level change or even used as steps. They can add beauty to an otherwise unsightly area and they can add height and textural interest to your garden.

Where To Find Landscaping Rocks

If you are resourceful, you may be able to find great landscaping rocks that are free. Contractors that are developing a new housing area will often dig up a lot of rocks as they are preparing ground for building. Most of the time these are free for the asking. You will, of course, have to have a way to transport them. It doesn’t take too many of these kinds of rocks to weigh down an average vehicle. So while the rocks may be free, getting them to your location may not.

Smaller garden landscaping rocks can also be found by taking a drive out along country roads. Be sure you are not taking rocks from anyone’s property without asking and that the rock has not already been placed at that location for a purpose.

If finding free rocks is not an option, or if you want rocks that are bigger than you can manage to get home, you can buy landscaping rocks from a rock quarry. You will be able to make arrangements to have large rocks delivered and if you prepare the space ahead of time, you may be able to get help with installation.

Artificial Landscaping Rocks

Another option is to use artificial landscaping rocks. They are made from polyurethane or fiberglass and are durable enough to withstand the test of time. Once positioned, they are very real in appearance.

While it may first seem odd, artificial rocks are the perfect solution in many cases. They are lightweight which greatly simplifies the purchase and installation process. They are hollow on the bottom which means they can be used to cover up unsightly things such as power boxes or anything you want out of sight.

You can purchase these decorative landscaping rocks online or order them through your local garden center.

How to Install Landscaping Rock

A large rock will require some planning and several people to install it. The rock will look like it’s a natural part of the landscape if you dig into the surrounding area and place the bottom of the rock beneath the surface. Measure the rock and determine it’s placement. Then dig a space for it to set. If the rock is going into a sloped area, be sure you dig into the side where it will be placed as well.

Once you have placed the rock, fill in around it with dirt. Plant grass around it and once it starts growing, the rock will look like it’s always been there. In a flower bed, you can creatively plant low growing flowers or ground cover near or around it to make the rock blend in with other elements.

Why Make Compost Tea?

Share

Having your garden in the perfect setting, adding accessories such as garden fence and arbours can only do so much to beautify your garden. The plants and flowers are what the garden is really all about. Keeping them robust and healthy is the most important  detail to having a Real Pretty Garden.

All living things need nutrients to be healthy. Plants are no exception. Proper feeding and fertilization can make a weak, scrawny plant come alive and turn into one of the most beautiful plants in your garden.

While most of us are familiar with the idea of mixing compost into the soil to prepare a fertile planting area, this can be taken a step further and the compost can be turned into liquid that will provide essential nutrients to your soil and plants almost instantly. This liquid is known in the gardening world as compost tea.

While you may have not heard of compost tea, experienced gardeners have known of it’s benefits for a long time. With today’s upsurge in natural green alternatives and a raised consciousness of recycling, the art of making compost tea has returned to the forefront as a popular alternative to other chemicals.

What is Compost Tea?

Basically, compost tea is liquid made from good homemade organic compost soaked in water. Of course there is a bit more involved in the details, but in essence that’s how it is made. This liquid will have the nutrients and microbes from the compost in it and can be used as a tonic or liquid fertilizer for your plants and garden.

Advantages of Compost Tea

Why not just use the compost? There are extra benefits in using tea.It can help to keep plants healthy by adding beneficial bacteria to the soil. The tea also acts as a fertilizer and  will give an instant boost to growing plants and vegetables.

Quantity and strength can be controlled during application and can be more heavily applied to plants that require more feeding. The benefits of this control will become obvious as you watch your plants flourish from proper fertilization.

Making Compost Tea

Getting started making your own compost tea is easy if you  follow a few basic principles. The best results will come from using a rich organic compost, preferably homemade. Worm composting produces a perfect mix for making tea, but other good compost sources can be used as well.

If you prefer, you can start with a small ready made kit and advance to making your own tea as you learn about various combinations and recommendations for use.

Garden Trellis Netting

Share

If you are short on space for your vegetable garden, garden trellis netting  can solve your problem. It is  a mesh made of heavy duty nylon that can be attached to poles or anything that will keep it vertical. The openings in the netting are typically 7″ square, making it easy to get to all areas of your plants. Your plants can then grow upward, saving space in your garden as well as saving your back and knees!

Growing your plants in a vertical position using trellis netting will give your plants the benefit of more even exposure to air, sun and water. While your plants might need a little help when first starting their climb, they will easily adapt.

Some plants actually thrive better when grown vertically. Using  garden netting to grow vine crops like peas, pole beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers may actually increase their yield. The vines can support the weight of the produce and having it up off the ground will help keep pests away.

Using this netting in a flower garden will add more structural interest and variety to the height of your garden. It is very easily attached to any surface  and you can make it any size you want. When your garden is done in the fall, you can store the netting for use next year.

About Cheap Garden Sheds

Share

The thing we don’t think about when planning that beautiful yard and garden  is all the stuff we’re going to need to have on hand. It accumulates amazingly fast and next thing you know, your car is parked outside because the garage is too full of lawn and garden supplies.

Now at my house, the car DOES NOT sleep outside. I think my husband might make me sleep outside if he had to choose!  So as my garden is beginning to grow and more things are accumulating, I see that I am going to need a garden shed.

I can see it now, a  play house for me! You know, shuttered windows with flower boxes, a little  front porch, even a  dutch door. Pure joy!   A little path could lead down to the pond surrounded by…

Okay, get a grip, girl. There is no pond surrounded by trees. No path. Not even a muddy trail.  And this is a just a garden shed, not my summer home. What I really need are some ideas for cheap garden sheds.

A shed needs to be put on a foundation that is level and has some kind of moisture proof barrier. The longest lasting and best choice is concrete. You will have to be able to pour a foundation of hire someone to do it for you. And the shed will also need to be anchored down, to keep wind from moving it or even blowing it away. You can buy anchors that attach to the shed and go into the ground or concrete.

Wood is a popular choice for sheds. The frames of wood sheds are made from lumber of different sizes. The lower the cost of the shed, the smaller the wood in the frame, which means some are stronger than others. The shed will need some type of ventilation, ordinary vents will do. The roof should have good roofing materials to prevent leaking and that is something worth investing a little more money on. The door should be made in a way that it won’t warp and all of hinges and latches should be rustproof. And even top-of the -line wood sheds will need painting.

Metal sheds have come a long way from the old rusty beat up tin thing that beautified yards across America back in the day. Again, there is a range of prices and it is possible to find a good cheap metal garden shed. Unless the look of rusty grunge is for you, get a one that is made from galvanized steel. Metal sheds have many interchangeable features to choose from. One thing to remember is that you might want an oversized door if you think you will ever want to store larger items.

Cheap plastic garden sheds that once cracked and faded in the sun are now made of a heavy PVC vinyl that has fade resistant coloring put in at the time of manufacturing. They are as durable and will last as long as a metal or wood shed. A vinyl garden shed will collect moisture easily and needs good ventilation. The customization options are more limited with a vinyl shed. If you need special windows or a custom door size, it would be better to choose a wood or metal garden shed.

I don’t know yet what kind of shed I will get. There is a much larger variety than I expected to find in both quality of materials and price. I do know I will be able to choose from the cheap garden sheds for sale and find something that will meet my needs and be attractive as well.

Garden Arbours

Share

There is nothing that adds style to your garden like an arbour. It makes a statement that your garden is an extension of your home rather than a little patch of flowers in the yard. Arbours can be garden entrances, or  join two garden areas together. If your garden is large, an arbour can sit somewhere inside it, serving as a charming accent.

Where To Put Arbours

Do you have a small area that you would like to serve as a garden? An arbour is just the thing. It can actually be your garden! There are many flowers and vines that can be planted and trained to climb the sides of arbours and window boxes can be built on the sides. Build an arbour with a seat inside and you’ve just created a small but beautiful garden with a place to sit and enjoy it. Rose arbours are always an attractive feature.

Arbours don’t have to involve a garden, however. They can serve as architectural features that add style to other outdoor areas of your home such as a pool area. Consider having one at the entrance to a yard or at the beginning of a sidewalk or path. An arbour with a swing built into it could stand alone as a focal point.

So Many Kinds of Arbours

Now that you know you need an arbour (or two!) you will have to decide on what kind. Garden arbours can be purchased in any number of materials. Wood, vinyl, aluminum, or wrought iron are all popular choices. Do you have garden fencing? Go with something that will match it or serve as an accent to it.

Buy It or Build It?

You can have your arbour professionally installed or do it yourself. If you like handyman projects, building an arbour would be a fairly easy project that would show off your skills outdoors where the world can see them.

If you do decide to build your arbour, you are only limited by your imagination. Think about using old screen or wooden doors or other salvaged architectural elements in your design. If you don’t want to design it yourself, there are plans or kits available that will make the job easier.

Now That It’s Done

So you’ve chosen a style and location and bought or built your arbour. How can you accent it?
Some prefer to let the beauty of the arbour speak for itself, keeping any plantings to a minimum. Others completely cover their arbours in easy to grow climbing vines or flowers. Deciding if you want your arbour to be a focal point or if you want it to blend naturally with other features will help you with the next step. If you are unsure of what you want, the best way is to start with a small amount of something and add to it as you go.

All About My Vinyl Garden Fence

Share

I have a new vinyl fence around my garden and it’s gorgeous!  I was a little hesitant to buy it at first because I just couldn’t get past the idea of it being vinyl. I mean, when you’re spending that kind of money, who wants plastic? I was so wrong.

Some Facts About Vinyl
This is what I learned. Vinyl fencing has been around since the 1980′s. It has evolved into a very good product over time. The vinyl is made of polyvinyl chloride which is the same stuff that PVC pipe and most vinyl siding is made of. It is a very hard, durable product. There is fade protection built into the product at the time it’s manufactured that will keep colors from fading and the gloss finish looking new. Certain product standards have been outlined for manufacturers of vinyl fencing by the American Society for Testing Materials. Most vinyl fence products come with a warranty that is anywhere from 20 years to a lifetime. It covers things like discoloration and cracking. So you are getting a quality product.

Installation
Installation of a vinyl garden fence is a little different than when you build a garden fence from wood. Since the individual panels are light weight, the posts have to be deep enough in the ground to keep strong wind from loosening the settings and they have to be closer together to keep the vinyl from buckling. Care should be taken to only use the tools recommended by the manufacturer, so you don’t damage any of the pieces while installing. If you keep these things in mind, your fence should go up easily and remain problem free for quite some time.

The Advantages
There is a huge variety of styles on the market to choose from. In fact, almost all types of fences made from other products are now available in vinyl. Since I wanted cottage garden fencing, I chose a white picket fence with a scalloped edge at the top. It’s just as charming as a wooden fence would be, but I won’t ever be spending time painting all those pickets! No painting. That make it the very best garden fence for me.  And it is very easy to clean. Just spray it down with a hose. Stubborn spots can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

Since I like to change things up from time to time, I was concerned that I might change my mind about the color of my fence. Guess what? There is spray paint available now that is made especially for vinyl! It comes in lots of colors and it would be easy to change the color or customize my fence whenever I get the urge. Painting it might affect part or all of my warranty, so I will have to consider that if I ever decide to make a change.

To any of you who are going to buy garden fence anytime soon, I encourage you to take a look at vinyl. You will find it’s an excellent choice.

A Few Garden Fencing Options

Share

There are several things to consider when deciding on garden fencing. Do you want it to serve as a decorative border to an area or do you need something more substantial that offers privacy or security? Are you a do-it-yourself type who might consider building a fence, or will you buy it and have it installed?

Whatever your needs and tastes, there is a large variety of styles and materials to choose from.

Wood
Wooden fences, of course, have been around forever. Natural wood can be used for building a fence that will blend with other elements of your garden. Wood can be cut and painted to make any style of fence if you want your garden to have a certain ambiance. For example, the look of a quaint cottage garden could be achieved by building a white picket fence.

Bamboo
Bamboo, which is really a woody grass, has become popular for garden fencing because of it’s natural appearance and the variety of styles and finishes available. It is easy to install and can be used for anything from a short flower bed boarder to a privacy fence.

Wire
The traditional wire boarder fence that comes either rolled or in sections is an old standard and makes very cheap garden fencing. The wire is covered in vinyl and it commonly comes in white, green and black. It is quickly installed, convenient to use, and easily moveable.

Wrought Iron
Although expensive, wrought iron garden fencing is beautiful, heavy and indestructible. If your garden is going to be a permanent part of your landscaping, wrought iron would be an excellent choice.

Vinyl
Something fairly new on the market is vinyl fencing. It is unexpectedly durable and easy to clean. It comes in a variety of colors and styles, and different textures that look like wood or metal are available. Small vinyl fencing for your garden will probably be sold in a package of multiple pieces. Larger vinyl fencing is sold in individual panels.

Critter-Proof
If your garden is even remotely tasty, chances are critters will find it. There are special types of fences that will keep them out. Cats, dogs and rabbits can be kept out by chicken wire or  mesh that is attached to metal posts you can pound into the ground. The fence should be at least 3 feet tall.

By carefully considering your needs, style preferences and budget, you will be in a good position to choose from all the types of fences available.
